When properly raised, African grey parrots are extroverted and self-assured birds, capable of developing an excellent vocabulary and speaking with great clarity. They also love to accurately imitate curious sounds, such as a key in the lock or the telephone ringing. Being birds that tend to be calmer, they appreciate tranquil home environments. They are often very affectionate and enjoy having their heads stroked (rubbing their feathers against the grain). They exhibit unusual digging behavior that they sometimes practice at the bottom of the cage or on any flat surface. They love to play energetically with hanging toys, especially with sturdy bells. African grey parrots have a special plumage that generates quite a bit of dust in the home; therefore, they are not the most suitable option for people with sensitive lungs. When they bite, they rarely give a gentle prior warning. If they feel scared, they emit a metallic grunt. There are two species of African grey parrots: the Congo grey parrot and the Timneh grey parrot. Each of these species has a distinct personality. The Congo grey parrot is the most well-known species; it is characterized by its bright red tail, light grey body, and completely black beak. They tend to be very intelligent, emotionally sensitive, and more introverted (or reflective) parrots. Congo grey parrots (*Congo African Grey*) tend to be more cautious in new situations and around new people than other birds. Most can learn to speak very well and develop extensive vocabularies that they use in appropriate contexts.
